Join us at the Garrett Museum of Art, located at 100 S. Randolph Street in Garrett, on Friday, January 10, 2025 from 5:00PM – 8:00PM to celebrate the opening of our first show of the new year, VIVIAN MAIER : THE COLOR WORK!

Admission is $5.00, open to the public, and all ages are welcome. The show will run from January 10, 2025 through March 1, 2025.

It happened in 2007 at a foreclosure auction in Chicago. One of the buyers, John Maloof, had made a purchase of abandoned boxes stuffed with photographs he hoped to use for a book he was working on at the time. Little did he know that he had unearthed an unbelievable find – thousands of negatives shot by a photographer unknown to the world. Maloof had a feeling that the photos and negatives were one-of-a-kind, so he found the other buyers who had attended the auction and purchased their negatives and prints.

Who was this mysterious photographer? She was identified as Vivian Maier by the name that appeared on the processing envelopes.

Vivian was a Chicago nanny and street photographer. Maloof searched for her until 2009 when her obituary appeared in a local newspaper. The rest of the story is extraordinary and fascinating. There is now an archive of 140,000 photographs that help to piece together her life and her artistic talents.

The unedited street photography in color slides, made between 1950 and mid-1970, give the viewer a glimpse of Maier’s insights and her incredible sense of timing. There are examples of portraits, streetscapes, and the lost souls of Chicago and New York. Maier did not print the color work but they are now visible thanks to John Maloof scanning these images.

On loan from Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City, an exclusive representative of Vivian Maier’s color photographs, are 19 photographic prints, from John Maloof’s collection!

The Garrett Museum of Art is thrilled to be able to bring these photographs to the Midwest and share the work of a once unknown, but gifted and inspired photographer.

As Joel Meyerowitz put so expressively in his foreword to the book, Vivian Maier The Color Work, by Colin Westerbeck, Maier was an early poet of color photography.”
