“I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree” by Joyce Kilmer captures the quiet yet powerful soul of trees.
Spectacular Trees, a juried exhibit, opens with a free opening reception on November 6, 2026 from 5PM – 8PM, at the Garrett Museum of Art. Showing deep resilience and connection, trees offer us beauty in every season. Green leaves turn to red and gold in the fall and snow dusts in the winter. There are winding branches and gnarly trunks growing in unique forms. They embody the balance in nature in their powerful presence.
Trees can also show ancestral relationships in the form of charts in genealogy connecting lineages and heritage. There are linguistic trees tracking how modern languages evolved from the ancient. Decision trees are visual flowcharts mapping choices. The famous tree of life is a symbol of interconnectedness of all creation.
Whether abstract or realistic, 2D or a sculpture, Spectacular Trees will bring beauty to the Garrett Museum of Art, much like leaves making a rustling sound in the air colored with the spectacular season they represent.
Let me leave you with poetry by the staff at GMoA which embodies their vision of trees.
Tree Interpretation
A tree — a doorway
With a key to a legend stitched into the bark
Under curves of sun and shadow
Tangled appendages evoking gentle gestures
Take in their compass,
hearing the timbre of leaves laughing in the wind
Primeval rhythms, a release
–Angela Green
Ancient trees stand tall and proud
Their roots are deep in the earth,
Hiding secrets from days long ago
–Jim Gabbard
I see you
moving in the trees—
you are the wind
that ruffles the leaves
of my mind.
I feel your cool breeze
caressing my skin,
whipping around
feelings of remorse and
heartache.
Rays shine down upon your grave;
flowers bloom splendidly
in dappled light from your tree—
you were the sun
and the breath
of life.
–Kasey Wallace-Reames
