Karen McArdle was an accomplished artist and teacher for more than 20 years. She received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Denver. She was Professor of Studio Art at the University of Saint Francis for the last 12 years of her career. During her lifetime, she explored a variety of mediums including ceramics, metalwork, jewelry making, and printmaking. Additionally, she truly enjoyed teaching and helping her students achieve their artistic goals.
Although she created many functional ceramic pieces during her career, she explored other forms of self-expression in ceramics as well as in other media. Later in her work, she used molds cast from her own arms to create sculptures which visually explored women’s roles in society.
Karen explored painting in her early years and then turned to printmaking, producing hundreds of woodblocks, lithographs, and silkscreens. In the metalcraft studios, she created beautiful custom jewelry, belt buckles, and fine metal pieces.
Karen was an incredibly talented artist who was passionate about her craft and about her students.
In the words of one of her students:
“…her life and memory lives with all of us through her caring and encouragement…she cared about education. She cared about her craft. She cared about personal interaction.”
