Join us at the Garrett Museum of Art, located at 100 S. Randolph Street in Garrett, on Friday, May 10, 2024 from 5:00PM – 8:00PM to celebrate the opening of our next exhibition, AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY.
Admission is FREE, open to the public, and all ages are welcome. The show will run from May 10, 2024 through July 28, 2024.
A philanthropic association of American photographers was established in 2012 by photographers Robert von Sternberg and Darryl Curran, with the goal of expressing gratitude towards institutions that support the photographic art form. Through this project, participating artists donate vintage and contemporary prints of their work to museum collections of their choice. The project initially consisted of seven artists, a core group, which increased to 19 artists. Since 2012, the group has donated 6,179 photographs to 220 institutional permanent collections of fine art in 50 states, Canada, Australia, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.
In 2021, the Evansville Museum in Indiana was invited to participate in the donation project. Thirteen nationally and internationally recognized American photographers have contributed to Evansville Museum’s permanent collection. The inventory of images reflects a wide range of contemporary perspectives and an assortment of concepts, styles, and photographic materials. The Garrett Museum of Art will have 51 of these photographs on display from May 10th – July 28th. This generous museum-to-museum loan is expected to impact the emotions of the visitor more powerfully than words. Connecting with the images has the ability to bring us closer to people and to circumstances. Photographers include: Robert von Sternberg, Michael Stone, Bonnie Schiffman, and Douglas Prince.
As a result of this loan from the Evansville Museum, Angela Green, Curator at GMoA, was contacted by two of the original project photographers, Robert von Sternberg and Michael Stone. They both generously offered to donate several photographs to the Garrett Museum of Art Permanent Collection. These recent 15 acquisitions have initiated our holdings of contemporary American photography. We thank the photographers for their generous gifts to the museum!
