HEATHER HOUSER
Heather N. Houser started painting in 2008 as a creative outlet and a way to decorate her walls. She has been juried into many shows and won several awards in local competitions. Heather says, “the goal of an artist is to bring a viewer into their own perspective, to reveal what it is that the artist sees in an object, person or scene.” She describes painting as a spiritual experience for her. She paints landscapes and portraits, striving as an artist to express the glory of creation and to signify the value of life. Her belief is that life, whether human, animal, or plant, is worth her time as an artist and our time as a viewer. Heather currently resides in Fort Wayne with her husband, three children, two cats, and a dog.
JANICE FURTNER
Janice Furtner’s paper trail began over 45 years ago while looking for a medium of art she might give presence to through an interest in endangered species, especially birds of prey. Works included goshawks, owls, and falcons. Her first shows were in her native state of California in Orange County. Her family’s move to Berne, Indiana opened a new world of papercutting which included traditional Japanese, Polish, and German papercuts. She incorporates handmade papers into her work through a paper importer in Chicago, along with machine made paper, maps, and ephemera. Her technique for cutting paper is self-taught, cutting freehand, and using a combination of scissors and blades. Her art is in the collections of many of Fort Wayne’s Sister Cities. She will be taking one of her papercuttings to China in October as a gift for Fort Wayne’s Sister City, Taizhou.
