Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) was an American painter and illustrator. His works have a popular appeal to a wide audience because they reflect the culture of America. Famous for his covers of The Saturday Evening Post, he brought illustrations of everyday life into our homes for five decades.
Join us at the Garrett Museum of Art, located at 100 S. Randolph Street in Garrett, on Friday, October 21, 2022 from 6PM to 8PM to celebrate the opening of our next exhibition, NORMAN ROCKWELL : AMERICAN ICON.
Admission is $5.00. The Opening Reception is open to the public and all ages are welcome. The show will run from October 21, 2022 through December 18, 2022.
The lithographs and collographs on exhibit are from the Permanent Collection of The Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, Indiana.
A ROCKWELL TIMELINE
At age 14, enrolled in art classes at The New York School of Art
Studied with Thomas Fogarty who prepared Rockwell for his first commercial commissions
Painted his first commission of four Christmas cards before he turned 16
As a teenager, hired as art director of Boy’s Life, and began his freelance career
1916, Rockwell (age 22) painted his first cover for The Saturday Evening Post
Over the next 47 years, he created 321 covers for the Post
1943, inspired by President Franklin Roosevelt’s address, painted Four Freedoms
Freedom of Speech, Freedom to Worship, Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear
Four Freedoms toured the US and through sale of War Bonds, raised $130 million
1943, an enormous loss from a fire at his studio
1963, left Post and worked for Look magazine for the next ten years
1973, Rockwell’s work placed in Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge, MA
1977, Rockwell received the Presidential Medal, our nation’s highest civilian honor

SPOTLIGHT GALLERY ARTIST : HEIDI MALOTT
Heidi Malott was born and raised in Indiana. She is a wife, mother of four, and grandmother of four. Her work can be found in Corporate and Private Collections.
She studied Visual and Commercial Art at the University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, focusing on design, composition, drawing, and watercolor. She attributes much of her learning from plein air painting outings with a group of Indiana artists, including Fred Doloresco.
She is excited to be a part of the local art community and is a recent member of IPAPA, Indiana Heritage Arts, and the Fort Wayne Artists Guild. She has won awards at Ventures, Kekionga, IPAPA Plein Air Events, and other juried shows to name a few.
