Join us at the Garrett Museum of Art, located at 100 S. Randolph Street in Garrett, on Friday, October 4, 2024 from 5:00PM – 8:00PM to celebrate the opening of our 2nd annual WOMEN TAKE THE WALLS 2024!

Admission is FREE, open to the public, and all ages are welcome. The show will run from October 4, 2024 through December 22, 2024.

Our 2nd annual WOMEN TAKE THE WALLS exhibition will illuminate 16 visionary artists who use an array of mediums that include oil and acrylic paintings, digital interactive art, contemporary dangling and wall sculptures, basketry, textiles, pottery, glass jewelry, wall installations, journals, paper-cutting, and photography. Their works will reflect their inspirations and their reimagining of realities.

Pioneered by women creators, contemporary sculptures will hang from the ceiling and walls. View a series of photographs of people who made Detroit’s rich history. The sky’s the limit as visitors can take in handmade glass jewelry – each piece one-of-a-kind, unique pottery, and sculptures featuring a bronze cockroach, and a vintage scale holding ceramic heads, paper art with contemporary and urban street flavor, paper-cutting art with Japanese roots, and extraordinary abstract landscapes, realistic landscapes, textile magic with a tablescape of pillows, and handcrafted, fine art journals made with the highest quality of paper and binding materials. And in a surprise return to GMoA, Migena Furxhi will be debuting a gorgeous hair sculpture made especially for this show!

In addition, each year the Garrett Museum of Art honors a Legacy Artist during the WOMEN TAKE THE WALLS exhibition. We are excited to announce that the artist honored in 2024 is Lilian (Bossom) Fendig (1912-1985), hailing from England but residing in Rensselaer, Indiana after marrying Ralph Fendig. She worked in oil and created woodblock engravings. She exhibited at the Hoosier Salon from 1950-1977 and was an active member of the Brown County Art Guild. Her work remains in many personal and corporate collections. Fendig’s artwork and illustrations, along with other ephemera, are graciously on loan to us by the Prairie Arts Council in Rensselaer, Indiana. We are honored to showcase her work here at GMoA!

Altogether, the innovative and unique works by all 16 artists will spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and will captivate viewers! Practices and perspectives will encourage visitors to take a slow look at this exhibit of women artists’ work and to revel in the thought-provoking creations on display.
