Join us at the Garrett Museum of Art, located at 100 S. Randolph Street in Garrett, on Friday, January 12, 2024 from 5:00PM – 8:00PM to celebrate the opening of our next exhibition, PERU COMMUNITY SCHOOLS ART GALLERY: THE G. DAVID THOMPSON COLLECTION.

Admission is FREE, open to the public, and all ages are welcome. The show will run from January 12, 2024 – March 17, 2024.

Peru High School is the home to the G. David Thompson Collection, a revered collection of original art. Thompson, a PHS graduate, began to gift the high school with this outstanding art collection in honor of his teacher, John Whittenberger.

Thompson became a wealthy Pittsburgh industrialist and world-renowned art collector. He collected modern art and his collection was highly regarded not only for its quality, but its scope. G. David gifted Peru High School over 71 pieces of art as well as a 54 piece collection of Oriental ceramics, the oldest dating back to 215 B.C. He continued to add to and enhance his collection until his death in 1965, frequently adding pieces specifically for the Peru gallery.

With the addition of other gifted pieces, the PCS Fine Art Collection has grown from Thompson’s initial gifts through donations from estates, artists, and local residents.

The city of Peru and the state of Indiana owes a great debt to G. David Thompson for sharing beautiful works of art with the community and the Hoosier state.

The Garrett Museum of Art will be showing 30 pieces of art from this outstanding collection in an exhibit opening on Friday, January 12, 2024. The exhibit gathers works by the following artists: George Braque (Cubist artist), Joan Miro (Spanish Surrealist), Georges Roualt (French painter), Robert Weaver (Indiana artist and Peru native), Malcolm Parcell (American Realist), among other artists of note.

The Spotlight Gallery in Garrett Museum of Art will be highlighting selections from a Native American inspired art collection gifted to the museum by Greg Slyford from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The museum invites visitors to tap into the story, spirit, and culture of Native peoples by viewing authentic bird stones and arrowheads, turquoise encrusted accessories, bronze sculptures, a cradle board, and other pieces.
