A new exhibit, Simplicity, will have an Opening Reception on Saturday, November 6th, from 4pm – 7PM, in the Lupke Gallery at the Garrett Museum of Art. The show will be on display through December 19th.

The exhibit consists of photographs and original haiku by co-authors, Jim Gabbard (Museum Director) and Angela Green (Gallery Coordinator). There will also be a book signing for that evening beginning at 5PM, accompanied by a short artist talk and haiku reading by the authors. Books will be available for purchase for $20.00.

Jim’s recent personal photographic work has been centered with the idea of finding beauty in everything around us.

“I have been especially drawn to the very simple elements that I find when I slow down and look at scenes from a different perspective. I have been trying to explore the combination of the visual image and the written word. The haiku I wrote for each of my photos expresses my views of the scene and how the image relates to my personal views and thoughts.
I enjoy the unique perspective that I find in the photography of Angela Green and I know her to be an excellent writer. I felt that joining our work together would offer a wonderful viewing experience. When doing the layout for the book, her photo of the solitary rock surrounded by water felt like the essence of what simple beauty means, and felt like the perfect choice for the cover.”

Angela comments:

“When Jim asked me to partner in this project of photographs and haikus, I immediately knew what photos I wanted to use in the book. Simplicity to me implies a purity of beauty in an object or a scene. I know when I find this contentment within after thinking about the setting in which the photo was taken. The stillness of a photo I have taken and its subject, is nuanced by the sounds and light around it. Writing haiku to accompany the photos I took was challenging but certainly a journey into the photograph and into the words and how to make them flow but have meaning. The haiku brings the photo to life and gives it a story of its own.”

Saturday, November 6, 2021 will be the Closing Night for the folk art whirligigs hand crafted by Mike McBride of Lake James. His whirligigs are hand cut or carved and painted to depict real life activities. The intricacies of these toys take time to perfect to get the movement just right. Add in the wind power and it makes for a delightful viewing. Mike will talk about his whirligig adventures at 5:15PM at the museum.

Rounding out this evening will be Joe Justice Live and his classic hits, soft rock, country, and smooth jazz music.  Come enjoy hearing the past and current hits played by Joe and take to the dance floor! Music will be live from 5:30PM – 7PM.

PLEASE NOTE: Our current exhibition, Rites, Rituals, Celebrations: Reaching Across Time – Al Harding, Jr. Photography Collection will CLOSE on Saturday, November 6th at 7PM.

The museum will not be open on Sunday, November 7th.
